Joey Barton: 'It was not a red card for Youssouf Mulumbu'

Joey Barton defends Youssouf Mulumbu after the West Bromwich Albion midfielder is sent off for an apparent elbow in their 4-1 defeat against Queens Park Rangers.

Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton has insisted that referee Lee Probert was wrong to send off Youssouf Mulumbu in West Bromwich Albion's 4-1 defeat to the Hoops.

Mulumbu was given his marching orders for an apparent elbow on Barton just minutes from full time, but the former England international does not believe that his opponent should have seen red.

"I didn't think it was a red card at the time. I just went to win the ball and I got hit late. I didn't feel I got done," Barton told BBC Sport.

"It was quite a sore one and the ref is there to do a job. He has obviously seen something and I couldn't question it because I was flat out on the floor. I don't think he is that kind of player and it wasn't that kind of game."

The result means that QPR are now just a point away from safety in the Premier League table.
