Jack Wilshere was reportedly left out of Gareth Southgate's preliminary squad for the 2018 World Cup due to concerns about his fitness.
According to The Times, the Arsenal midfielder was unable to keep up with the pace during training sessions ahead of the national team's friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy in March.
Southgate is said to have sent Wilshere back to his club ahead of the game against the Netherlands due to concerns that he is incapable of implementing his fast-paced, high-pressing tactics.
The official reason given for Wilshere returning to Arsenal was that a tendon problem in his knee had flared up.
Wilshere's career has been disrupted by injuries in recent seasons and his long-term future at Arsenal is unclear, with contract talks between player and club yet to progress.
