Cardiff City 1-0 Huddersfield Town

An injury-time goal from captain Mark Hudson gives Cardiff City a 1-0 win against Huddersfield Town in tonight's Championship opener at the Cardiff City Stadium.

An injury-time goal from captain Mark Hudson has given Cardiff City a 1-0 win against Huddersfield Town in tonight's Championship opener at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The visitors, who were without last season's leading goalscorer Jordan Rhodes, dominated much of the opening half and could have taken the lead when Scott Arfield found space on the angle. However, David Marshall got down low to palm away the effort.

At the other end, Jordan Mutch, who was making his home debut for the Bluebirds, saw his drive flash wide following a scramble in the area.

Oliver Norwood nearly scored a spectacular debut goal for Huddersfield, but his dipping drive from outside of the area had to be tipped away by Marshall.

The best chance of the opening half came just a minute before the break as Cardiff's Heidur Helguson headed against the crossbar from a corner.

The home side started the brighter in the second half and felt that they should have had a penalty when Keith Southern looked to have kicked Helguson. However, the referee waved away the Welsh appeals.

Futher chances fell to Mutch and Kevin McNaughton, but Cardiff were unable to make the breakthrough.

Meanwhile, Jack Hunt lashed over from 25 yards for the visitors before Marshall pulled off an acrobatic save from an Arfield shot that was bound for the top corner.

With the first of five added minutes on the clock, Hudson was on hand in the area to poke the ball home and give Malky Mackay's men the three points.
