Charlton Athletic edge five-goal thriller against Derby County

Charlton Athletic beat Derby County 3-2 in their Championship match to continue their unbeaten start to the season.

Charlton Athletic have kept up their unbeaten start to the Championship season after claiming a 3-2 victory over Derby County at The Valley this evening.

The hosts had a chance to score early on when Johann Berg Gudmundsson fired in a shot from range that was saved by Lee Grant.

In the 11th minute Charlton took the lead through George Tucudean, who was found by Jordan Cousins before driving a strike into the bottom corner.

Derby came close to an immediate response moments later, but Jeff Hendrick saw his attempt saved by Nick Pope.

They did manage to draw level just past the half-hour mark when Jamie Ward fired a strike into the top corner.

On the stroke of half time, Charlton were given the chance to retake lead when Richard Keogh gave away a penalty for bringing down Igor Vetokele inside the box.

Yoni Buyens stepped up to take the resulting spot kick and placed his effort past Grant to put his side ahead.

After the break, Vetokele was close for the hosts when he was played through on goal, but the striker saw his effort saved by the keeper, before Johnnie Jackson curled a free kick narrowly over the bar.

Charlton continued to dominate and scored their third of the evening in the 78th minute. Jackson's cross was flicked on by Lawrie Wilson into the path of Vetokele, who headed home from close range.

Ward pulled a goal back for Derby with five minutes left to play when his strike beat Pope, but the hosts managed to hold on and claim all three points.
