Report: Football Association outlines desire to reduce Premier League to 18 teams

A report suggests that Football Association chairman Greg Dyke wants to reduce the Premier League to 18 teams to improve performances of the England national side.

Football Association chairman Greg Dyke has reportedly outlined his desire to see the Premier League reduced from 20 to 18 teams.

The top flight has contained 20 sides since the league was cut from 22 teams in 1995, but Dyke has issued a plan to reduce the league once again, and has scheduled talks with Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore.

Dyke believes that cutting the teams and reducing the number of games played in the Premier League would result in improved performances by England at major tournaments, reports The Times.

However, the broadcast contracts with Sky and BT remain in place until 2019, which means that any change would be unlikely until then, while the Football League would also have to be consulted due to the knock-on effect.

Dyke has been in his role as FA chairman since 2013.
