Will Sagnol aiming to change French mentality

Former France international Willy Sagnol believes that French football is lacking "winners".

Former France international Willy Sagnol has outlined his intention to create more winners in French football.

France have failed to perform to a high standard in a number of recent tournaments, with the 2006 World Cup final being the only success since 2000.

Sagnol, who oversees the French youth teams from Under-15s to Under-21s, believes that his compatriots need more of a winning mentality if they are to compete at the highest level again, and is keen to help instill that in young players.

"We need winners. That is what is lacking in French culture generally, and it's not easy to develop," said Sagnol.

"While you can improve a player's technical ability and help him evolve, it is hard to change the mentality.

"Once they are in a high-level structure, that must be mandatory, it must have the same importance as technical education."

Sagnol, 35, made 58 appearances for Les Bleus in an international career that lasted eight years.
