Liverpool bosses have reportedly spoken to Louis van Gaal with the intention of making him the club's new sporting director.
The Dutchman recently said that he was itching to get back into employment and work with players.
While that would seem to rule out the possibility of a director's role, Anfield chiefs have reportedly identified Van Gaal as an ideal candidate to replace Damien Comolli.
Liverpool's managing director Ian Ayre flew to Van Gaal's summer residence in the Algarve to discuss the position last week, according to The Telegraph.
Van Gaal, who has won titles with Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich, is believed to be keen on a move to England.
