Phil Jones is reportedly losing his battle to shake off an ankle injury in time for Manchester United against Real Madrid.

Manchester United defender Phil Jones has reportedly been rated doubtful for next week's Champions League tie against Real Madrid.

The 20-year-old suffered an ankle injury during United's FA Cup match against Reading just over a week ago.

The complaint was believed to be serious enough to keep him out of the club's next two Premier League games, but there was hope that he would be fit for the visit of the Spanish champions a week today.

However, the England international, who played in a midfield role during the first leg at the Bernabeu, is yet to begin training with his teammates, according to The Guardian.

It has been claimed that Ferguson will give Jones up until the Monday before the game to prove his fitness.
