Kenny Dalglish defends Manchester United style of play

Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish brushes off criticism of Manchester United's style of play by citing their third-placed position in the Premier League.

Former Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has defended Louis van Gaal's style of play at Manchester United.

The Dutchman's tactics have come under fire in certain sections this year, and West Ham United boss Sam Allardyce labelled the Red Devils as "long-ball United" after their 1-1 draw last week.

Reds legend Dalglish brushed off the criticism and said that it was imperative for United to make sure that they finish inside the top four after their failure to qualify for the Champions League last term.

The Scot told The Mirror: "The most important thing for Manchester United this year is where they finish in the league more so than their style of play.

"You have to take everything into consideration. They've had a load of injuries and they've brought a lot of players in for their first season.

"The style might not be suitable to everybody - ie, the supporters - but the position is more important than the style this year."

Van Gaal's side are currently third in the Premier League.
