Gary Neville: 'Luke Shaw the best left-back in the country'

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville believes that a fully-fit Luke Shaw is the best left-back in the Premier League.

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has said that he believes current Red Devils defender Luke Shaw is the best left-back in the country.

The former Southampton man has kept new arrival Alex Telles out of the team with a string of stellar performances throughout the past few months, and he doubled United's lead in their 2-0 triumph over Manchester City at the weekend.

Shaw also boasts five assists in the current top-flight campaign, and while Neville has urged caution with the injury-plagued Shaw, he does not think that there is a better left-back in the country when the 25-year-old is firing on all cylinders.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Neville said: "He's been outstanding this season for United. A Luke Shaw [that is] fit, a Luke Shaw [that is] physically good, a Luke Shaw [that is] confident is the best left back in the country, in my opinion.

"But all those three things being combined at once has probably only happened at certain points in his career. And that's been a problem for him. But certainly this is the best period he has had.

'We've seen him in the last week or two go down in a couple of games like he's just on the edge a little bit. And that would worry me if I was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. I just think how they handle him in the next few weeks is important."

Shaw and Bruno Fernandes got the goals as United ended Man City's 21-game winning run on Sunday, and that result sees them sit 11 points adrift of the league leaders.
