Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson has backed Jose Mourinho to take over at Old Trafford when Sir Alex Ferguson steps down.

The Scot has celebrated 25 years with the club this season following his appointment from Aberdeen in 1986.

Despite putting forward Mourinho's name, Robson believes that United haven't even considered Ferguson's successor.

"As far as I am concerned, and from what I know about Manchester United, they are not considering that at the moment," he said.

"How do you replace Sir Alex Ferguson? It is near enough impossible.

"But they are going to have to do that and Mourinho is definitely one who would be up at the top of the list. His record speaks for itself."

Real Madrid recently claimed that Mourinho was expected to see out the remaining two years of his deal at the Santiago Bernabeu.
