Louis van Gaal: 'Rio Ferdinand left Manchester United at right time'

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes that defender Rio Ferdinand left the club at the right time.

Louis van Gaal has said that Rio Ferdinand made the right decision in leaving Manchester United at the end of the 2013-14 season.

The defender's 12-year spell at Old Trafford came to an end when he was not offered a new contract, agreeing a one-year deal with Queens Park Rangers earlier this summer.

The United manager told reporters: "There is a time to stay and a time to go and I think he has decided to go. He was a great player and maybe he is still a great player but there is always a time to go with a club."

Ferdinand will return to Old Trafford when QPR face United on Sunday.
