Arsenal wanted to bring Luke Shaw to the Emirates Stadium as part of the proposed swap deal that will see Alexis Sanchez join Manchester United, according to a report.

Manchester United reportedly knocked back an approach from Arsenal for left-back Luke Shaw during their ongoing Alexis Sanchez talks.

The two sides have been locked in discussions over the past week regarding a move for Chile international Sanchez, who is understood to have now agreed personal terms with the Red Devils.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan will head the opposite way as part of the transfer but, according to The Sun, Arsenal initially wanted Shaw as part of the exchange deal.

United were quick to reject the offer, though, and instead intend to offer the 22-year-old - heavily praised by Jose Mourinho this week - a new deal before the end of the season.

The report suggests that Arsenal could make a fresh bid for Shaw in the summer, however, as they intend to keep a close eye on developments.
