Louis van Gaal targets Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen?

New Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal wants to sign Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen, according to a report.

New Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has reportedly identified Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen as one of his main transfer targets.

The 28-year-old has been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer after falling down the pecking order at the Emirates Stadium.

With Patrice Evra expected to leave United amid interest from Juventus, Luke Shaw would be Van Gaal's only recognised left-back.

According to The Guardian, Vermaelen's ability to play at left-back or centre-back is a factor in Van Gaal's desire to sign him.

It is thought that the Belgian international, who has one year remaining on his Arsenal contract, could be allowed to leave for a fee in the region of £12m.

Van Gaal will officially start work as United manager on Wednesday.
