MK Dons promoted to Championship after thrashing Yeovil Town

MK Dons are promoted to the Championship after thrashing already-relegated Yeovil 5-1 at the Stadium MK.

MK Dons have been promoted to the Championship after their 5-1 thrashing of already-relegated Yeovil Town, combined with Colchester United's 1-0 win against Preston North End, saw them finish second in League One.

The hosts took the lead after just six minutes when Samir Carruthers picked out Carl Baker, who then lashed a 25-yard rocket into the Glovers net, leaving Artur Krysiak with no chance.

MK Dons upped the tempo as the game went on and soon had their beleaguered opponents under siege as Dean Lewington, Carruthers and Baker, among others, had a plethora of efforts towards goal.

Karl Robinson's charges were relentless and duly doubled their advantage 24 minutes in when Lewington curled a free kick round the Glovers' defensive wall and into the top corner of the net.

Yeovil were in real danger of being routed as Carruthers slotted a pass through for Will Grigg in the 27th minute, but the 23-year-old sent his shot the wrong side of the post.

Indeed, the Dons added a third in the 35th minute courtesy of a corner falling to Darren Potter, who fired home on the half-volley to put his side in with a shout of automatic promotion.

It got even worse for Yeovil before the half was over as Lewington whipped a cross over to the far post, where Grigg rose highest to head home.

Paul Sturrock's charges went on to grab a consolation just before the hour when James Hayter swept the ball into the net from close range, but Dons surged back into a four-goal lead in the 74th minute through a bullet header from Lewington.

Dons, buoyed by Preston's defeat, saw the game out and celebrated as they went up to the Championship for the first time in their history.
