Preview: Morecambe vs. Charlton Athletic - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's League One clash between Morecambe and Charlton Athletic, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Morecambe are seeking to get their first win in the league since October when they play host to Charlton Athletic at the Mazuma Stadium this Saturday.

The visitors, meanwhile, are aiming to end a run of five consecutive games without a victory in all competitions, and will enter this contest fresh off the back of a 3-1 defeat to Stockport County in the FA Cup second round.

It is fair to say that Derek Adams is having a tough time in his second spell at Morecambe, recording just six wins from his 40 matches in charge.

Just one of those triumphs have come in the last 14 fixtures in all competitions, Morecambe not getting a win on the board since October 22.

Two goals in two first-half minutes saw Morecambe share the spoils with Exeter from a 1-1 draw at the Mazuma Stadium last time out.

Cole Stockton scored his second goal in two games to give Adam's side the lead before Sam Nombe pulled Exeter level just moments later.

That result leaves the Shrimps bottom of League One and desperate for points, as they remain five adrift of safety.

As for Charlton, they are looking to respond to the disappointment of crashing out of the FA Cup when they take on Morecambe this weekend.

Will Collar's hat-trick for Stockport County knocked out the managerless League One outfit in their FA Cup second-round replay.

Ben Garner was relieved of his duties as Charlton boss last Monday after six months in charge, and despite guiding the Addicks to a Carabao Cup fourth-round tie against Premier League Brighton, Garner won only three of his last 16 league games in charge - dating back to August.

Garner's eventual successor has a fight on their hands to ensure the Addicks are playing League One football next season, as they have taken only two points from their past five League One matches, and have slipped 17th in the table, just seven points above the relegation zone.

Anthony Hayes has been put in caretaker charge, and he will feel he can get three points on the board in his first league game in charge against a Morecambe side that have not won in all competitions since October.

Team News

Morecambe's Cole Stockton celebrates scoring their first goal against Blackburn Rovers in the EFL Cup on August 10, 2021© Reuters

Cole Stockton looks likely to keep his place after scoring his second goal in as many games against Exeter last time out.

Adam Mayor started his first game for the club against Exeter, however, Adams may opt for more experience given Morecambe's desperation for points.

Hayes made seven changes against Stockport to the Charlton side that lost against Cheltenham Town, so he could shuffle the pack once again here.

Chuks Aneke spearheaded Charlton's attack last time out, but Hayes may opt for a more experienced option in Jayden Stockley, who has made 22 appearances in all competitions for the League One outfit this season.

Morecambe possible starting lineup:
Ripley; Cooney, O'Connor, Bedeau, Gibson; Weir, Shaw; Watts, Taylor, Mayor; Stockton

Charlton Athletic possible starting lineup:
Maynard-Brewer; Clare, Lavelle, Inniss, Sessegnon; Morgan, Dobson, Fraser; Rak-Sakyi, Stockley, Kirk

We say: Morecambe 1-1 Charlton Athletic

With neither side in particularly good form, that may suit the home side as they look to cause an upset.

However, we think this will be a tightly-contested affair at the Mazuma Stadium, as Charlton have only won once on their travels while Morecambe have the second-worst home record in the division.
