Preview: Motherwell vs. Hibernian - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Scottish Premiership clash between Motherwell and Hibernian, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Motherwell will be hoping to kick on from their opening-day draw when they host Hibernian for their first home fixture of the new Scottish Premiership campaign on Saturday.

The visitors failed to even pick up a point on their first outing of the season, but they were triumphant during their midweek European fixture.

Motherwell extended their five-match unbeaten run in all competitions on the opening day of the season, but they had to share the spoils with Dundee.

Despite the fact that Theo Bair gave the Steelmen the lead at the end of the first half, they were unable to hold on to that as Lyall Cameron scored an equaliser in the 68th minute which led to a draw.

While the result might have been frustrating for Motherwell fans, there were plenty of positive signs for the team overall, particularly on the back of a solid Scottish League Cup campaign.

Stuart Kettlewell's men topped their group by winning all three games while showcasing a lot of attacking qualities as they scored nine times throughout those fixtures.

That is something Motherwell will now be hoping to bring to the pitch on Saturday, particularly since their opponents struggled on the road last season.

Hibernian only managed five victories in away games throughout the 2022-23 campaign, which proved to be a weak point in comparison to the 10 they secured at home.

That is something the visitors will be attempting to change this time around, especially since they kick-started this season with a 3-2 defeat against St Mirren.

Lee Johnson was left frustrated on the touchline last weekend as he watched his men concede twice in the opening 20 minutes of the game, only to see them fight back to get back to 2-2.

Adam Le Fondre got things started for Hibernian, and the squad likely thought they had rescued a point when Christian Doidge scored in the 82nd minute, but a lack of concentration led to them conceding in the 89th minute.

It was late heartbreak for the Hibees, but the squad recovered immediately in midweek by defeating Luzern in the Europa Conference League third-round qualifying match.

Gals from Joe Newell, Dylan Vente and Jordan Obita created a 3-1 victory which put Hibernian in a strong position heading into the second leg of that tie, while it should have injected confidence into the team ahead of Saturday.

Team News

After scoring on his debut, Bair should be able to retain his place in the starting lineup as he looks to continue his impressive start to life as a Motherwell player.

Calum Butcher is still an injury problem for the Steelmen though, continuing on from last season as his foot has still not recovered.

For the visitors, Vente will be hoping to stay in the team after scoring on his debut in midweek, showcasing the quality that he will be able to add to the team.

Hibernian also have a long-term injury problem to contend with though as Jonah Ayunga continues to work his way back from his cruciate ligament injury.

Motherwell possible starting lineup:
Oxborough; Mugabi, Casey, Blaney; McGinn, Miller, Paton, Souare; Bair, Wilkinson, Spittal

Hibernian possible starting lineup:
Boruc; Delferriere, Fish, Hanlon, Stevenson; Doyle-Hayes, Campbell, Newell; Boyle, Doidge, Vente

We say: Motherwell 1-1 Hibernian

Motherwell have enjoyed a strong run of form in all competitions to kick-start the season, and that will lead to them being difficult to break down in this match.

However, the visitors boast a strong squad and picked up a midweek victory which could lead to the two teams battling it out to a draw.
