Newcastle United move into fifth position in the Premier League table courtesy of a 5-1 victory over Brentford.

Newcastle United have moved into fifth position in the Premier League table courtesy of a 5-1 victory over Brentford at St James' Park.

The Magpies have now only lost one of their nine league games this term, and their third victory of the campaign has seen them rise into fifth spot, two points behind Chelsea, who were 3-0 winners over Wolverhampton Wanderers on the same afternoon.

Brentford, who sit 11th in the division on 10 points, had the ball in the back of the net in the 10th minute of the match through Bryan Mbeumo, but the effort was chalked off for offside.

Instead, it was Newcastle that made the breakthrough in the 21st minute, with Bruno Guimaraes heading into the back of the net after meeting an excellent cross from Kieran Trippier.

The home side then doubled their lead in the 28th minute when a mistake from Brentford goalkeeper David Raya led to Callum Wilson feeding Jacob Murphy, who slotted into the back of the net.

Brentford almost halved the deficit early in the second half when Ivan Toney picked out Mbeumo, who fired a low shot towards the bottom corner, but Nick Pope was on hand to make a smart save.

The Bees did score in the 52nd minute, though, with Toney finding the back of the net from the penalty spot after Dan Burn had handled inside the box.

Newcastle had their third just two minutes later, with Guimaraes managing to squeeze his effort past Raya as the home side answered straight back against Thomas Frank's side.

Eddie Howe's side were not finished, though, and made it 4-1 in the 82nd minute when Miguel Almiron took advantage of a mistake from Ethan Pinnock to fire into an empty net.

There was also time for a fifth, with an own goal from Pinnock capping off a miserable afternoon for Brentford, who conceded three times during a difficult second period.

Newcastle put four past Fulham in their last match and hit another five on Saturday, which will leave them in good confidence ahead of their next game against Manchester United on October 16.
