Georginio Wijnaldum: 'We have learned from mistakes in recent weeks'

Newcastle United playmaker Georginio Wijnaldum says that the club learned from recent mistakes in order to push themselves to victory over Liverpool in the Premier League.

Newcastle United playmaker Georginio Wijnaldum has insisted that the club learned from their recent disappointments in order to triumph over Liverpool on Sunday.

Wijnaldum scored a late second in the Magpies' 2-0 win in the Premier League, and the 25-year-old has since claimed that his side's poor performances of late helped to spur them on to victory at St James' Park.

"It's a really big result because we've had a few poor weeks. We reacted well today. We played as a team. It was difficult for Liverpool to create chances. We learned from the last two weeks where the performance was not good," said Wijnaldum, according to BBC Sport.

"When you play at home you want the fans behind you and you must give them something back. Sometimes you need luck to score a goal. The first bit of luck was the ball staying at my feet. After that I shoot. He touched it - I still think it's my goal because I've shot on goal.

"It's always important and good if you win games because it will give you confidence. We must know we won't win games easily. We must fight like we did today."

The win has moved Newcastle level on points with fellow strugglers Bournemouth and Norwich City, who both sit just above the relegation zone.
