Dodds, Dack on target as Port Vale, Gillingham play out draw at Vale Park

Port Vale and Gillingham play out a draw in their second League One game of the season following goals from Louis Dodds and Bradley Dack.

Port Vale and Gillingham played out a draw in their second League One game of the season following goals from Louis Dodds and Bradley Dack.

The Valiants started the better side with Ryan Inniss, on loan from Crystal Palace, almost scoring from close range in the first minute following a scramble in the box.

Sam Foley then came close for Port Vale with a free kick shortly after, but could only bend his shot wide of the post.

Gillingham went ahead 17 minutes in as Dack smashed a free-kick effort beyond Port Vale loanee keeper Jak Alnwick to make it 1-0.

The Valiants were keen to fight back, however, and were level 20 minutes later as Dodds fired the ball into the back of the net after some good play from Anthony Grant and Byron Moore.

Port Vale continued to put pressure on the Gillingham defence in an effort to lead at half time, but both teams went in all square at the break.

The home side began the second half on the front foot, with Inniss heading onto the crossbar from Foley's free-kick five minutes in and Uche Ikpeazu blasting over the frame of the goal shortly after.

Gillingham then had a number of half chances as the game began to slow, but after forcing Alnwick into a save with a John Egan shot, the game went on to finish level.
