Preview: Portsmouth vs. Barnsley - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Portsmouth and Barnsley, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

League One leaders Portsmouth will have the opportunity to clinch promotion when they welcome Barnsley to Fratton Park on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Tykes are currently sitting in fifth position and are hoping to secure their place in the League One playoffs.

Match preview

Portsmouth missed the chance to claim the win that would have sent them up in Saturday's away clash with Bolton Wanderers.

Abu Kamara saw his early opener cancelled out by Aaron Collins, whose 36th-minute equaliser ultimately proved to be the final goal of the game.

The 1-1 draw ensured that Pompey remained nine points clear of third-placed Bolton, leaving them on the verge of returning to the Championship for the first time in 12 years.

Pompey will secure promotion with a draw against Barnsley, while a victory would send John Mousinho's side up as champions.

The leaders will be confident of claiming at least a point, having avoided defeat in each of their last 16 matches since losing to Leyton Orient in the middle of January.

In contrast to their hosts, Barnsley are currently experiencing a poor run of form after winning just one of their previous six matches.

They have also taken just one point from three matches since beginning the month with a 3-1 away victory over Burton Albion.

The Tykes lost 2-1 to both Charlton Athletic and Stevenage, before they fought back on two occasions to play out a 2-2 draw in Saturday's home meeting with Reading.

Adam Phillips found the net in a third consecutive game to cancel out Sam Smith's opener, before Fabio Jalo restored parity following Lewis Wing's 81st-minute effort.

Despite their lacklustre run of results, Barnsley still boast a sizeable five-point cushion over seventh-placed Blackpool, knowing that a win on Tuesday would guarantee them a place in the playoffs.

Team News

Portsmouth remain without the services of Tom McIntyre, Joe Morrell, Alex Robertson, Terry Devlin and Regan Poole.

Tom Lowery is closing in on a return to action, but it is unclear whether he will be passed fit in time for Tuesday's contest.

Midfielder Lee Evans could be brought into the starting lineup after dropping out of the side for the last two matches.

As for the visitors, Barnsley boss Neill Collins is unable to call upon the injured duo of Donovan Pines and Robbie Cundy.

Jon Russell is a doubt for the midweek away trip after he was forced off in the first half of Saturday's draw with Reading.

Jalo, who replaced Russell at the weekend, could be rewarded with a starting opportunity following his late equaliser against the Royals.

Portsmouth possible starting lineup:
Norris; Rafferty, Raggett, Shaughnessy, Ogilvie; Evans, Pack; Kamara, Lang, Lane; Bishop

Barnsley possible starting lineup:
Roberts; Williams, De Gevigney, Earl; Williams, O'Keeffe, Phillips, Kane, Cadden; Jalo; Cole, McAtee

We say: Portsmouth 2-2 Barnsley

Portsmouth have seen two of their last three matches finish all square, and after drawing their previous two home games against Barnsley, we think that they will settle for the point that would secure promotion to the Championship.
