Freiburg beat Schalke to continue resurgence

Freiburg record a 2-0 victory over Schalke 04 to claim successive Bundesliga wins for the first time this season.

Freiburg have recorded back-to-back Bundesliga victories for the first time this season thanks to a 2-0 win over Schalke 04.

Ralf Fahrmann was forced into action early on to keep Schalke on level terms with a fine save to keep out Sebastian Freis, who had timed his run perfectly to break free of the visiting defence.

Schalke would enjoy an extended spell on top as Roberto Di Matteo's side started to dominate possession, but they fell behind midway through the first half when Christian Gunter latched on to a loose ball in the box to fire home.

Sebastian Kerk came close to doubling Freiburg's advantage before the break with a low effort which forced Fahrmann into another save.

Di Matteo was left frustrated again early in the second half as his side failed to turn an extended spell of domination into clear goalscoring opportunities.

They were made to pay for a lack of a cutting edge in the 68th minute when Jonathan Schmid reacted quickest to a Vladimir Darida cross to slot home.

Freiburg were comfortable in the closing stages as Christian Streich's side cruised to just a second win of the Bundesliga season.
