Schalke 04 chairman Clemens Tonnies says that Rafael van der Vaart is not a target for the Bundesliga club, leaving the Tottenham midfielder's future in doubt.

Schalke 04 chairman Clemens Tonnies has claimed that the German outfit are not interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rafael van der Vaart.

The 29-year-old has been linked with a switch to the Bundesliga in recent weeks and has been coy about his future at White Hart Lane.

"If we had really wanted to have him, then we would have got him," ESPN quotes Tonnies as saying. "But it didn't make any sense because we were miles apart. The topic is over."

The Netherlands international could be in limbo in terms of his future after reports emerged claiming that the North London Premier League club are willing to sell the playmaker.
