Preview: Switzerland vs. Luxembourg - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's friendly clash between Switzerland and Luxembourg, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Switzerland will be bidding to post their first victory since June 2024 when they host Luxembourg in a friendly on Tuesday night.

The hosts will enter the clash off the back of a 1-1 draw with Northern Ireland, while Luxembourg recorded an excellent 1-0 victory over Sweden last time out, with Seid Korac netting the only goal of the contest.

Switzerland's last victory was a 2-0 success over Italy in the last-16 stage of Euro 2024, with the national side going eight matches without a win, including a penalty-shootout loss to England in the quarter-finals of last summer's European Championship.

Murat Yakin's team had a disappointing UEFA Nations League campaign, finishing bottom of Group 4 of League A, picking up just two points from their six matches, which saw them relegated to League B.

Switzerland have drawn three of their last four matches, including a 1-1 with Northern Ireland on Friday, while their last competitive match ended in a 3-2 defeat to Spain in November 2024.

A-Team will tackle Mexico and the United States in their two June friendlies this year before beginning their 2026 World Cup qualification campaign at home to Kosovo on September 5.

Switzerland have reached the knockout round of each of the last three World Cups, and they have not failed to qualify for the finals of the tournament since 2002, so it would be a surprise to see them absent next year.

Luxembourg will be bidding to make it back-to-back wins, having recorded a 1-0 success over Sweden on Saturday, with Korac netting the only goal of the contest in the 23rd minute.

Luc Holtz's side have only lost one of their last five matches, but they still finished bottom of Group 3 of League C in the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League, only picking up three points from their six games.

The Red Lions have not actually won a competitive match since November 2023, but they have proven to be difficult to overcome of late, and their result against Sweden last time out was a huge one for the team ranked 92 in the world by FIFA.

Luxembourg have never qualified for the finals of a World Cup, but their qualification campaign for the 2026 competition will begin at the start of September against Northern Ireland.

The national side have lost their last two matches against Switzerland, including a 1-0 reverse in their last meeting in November 2011, while they have only won five of their previous 35 fixtures against Tuesday's opponents.

Team News

Breel Embolo celebrates scoring for Switzerland on June 15, 2024 [IMAGO]© Imago

Switzerland head coach Yakin is likely to introduce Eray Comert and Djibril Sow into his XI for Tuesday's fixture, but the majority of the players that took to the field for the first whistle against Northern Ireland should keep their spots.

Breel Embolo has netted 15 times in 73 appearances for his national side, and the 28-year-old will continue in the final third.

Dan Ndoye and Ruben Vargas are also in line for spots in the attacking areas, while Vincent Sierro is set to be handed an 11th cap in the middle of the Switzerland midfield on Tuesday night.

As for Luxembourg, no injury problems have been reported from the team's clash with Sweden last time out.

Gerson Rodrigues has an excellent record for the national side, finding the back of the net on 23 occasions in 68 appearances, and the 29-year-old will again feature in a wide position here.

Brian Madjo, 16, made his debut as a starter against Sweden, and there could again be another spot in the final third for the talented attacker, who plays his club football for Metz Under-19s.

Switzerland possible starting lineup:
Kobel; Schmidt, Comert, Zesiger, Rodriguez; Sow, Sierro; Ndoye, Aebischer, Vargas; Embolo

Luxembourg possible starting lineup:
Moris; Jans, Korac, Carlson, Bohnert; Martins, Olesen, Barreiro; Rodrigues, Sinani, Madjo

We say: Switzerland 2-1 Luxembourg

Luxembourg were excellent against Sweden on Saturday, and the visitors will therefore enter this match full of confidence; Switzerland are due a win, though, and we are expecting the home team to navigate their way to a narrow success on Tuesday night.
