Preview: Wycombe Wanderers vs. Wigan Athletic - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's League One clash between Wycombe Wanderers and Wigan Athletic, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Aiming to extend a six-match unbeaten streak and strengthen their position in the top two of the League One table, Wycombe Wanderers will welcome Wigan Athletic to Adams Park on Saturday.

The hosts moved five points clear of third spot with a victory on Tuesday, while their visitors sit 16th in the midst of a four-match winless streak.

Wycombe Wanderers return to Adams Park on Saturday aiming to give their League One automatic promotion hopes another major boost with a second straight victory, having moved further clear of the chasing pack in midweek.

The Chairboys sat second on 51 points from 25 games following Matt Bloomfield's departure in early January, but they have not struggled since, going unbeaten and collecting 12 more points from their last six outings and scoring eight goals to move onto a league-high tally of 58.

Under new permanent manager Mike Dodds, who took charge in early February, they began with a penalty shootout defeat to second-tier Preston North End in the FA Cup, before sharing the points in a 1-1 draw away at Crawley Town last weekend as Daniel Udoh levelled the scores in the first half.

Bristol City then visited Adams Park on Tuesday, and Dodds picked up a first victory as Chairboys boss, with Cameron Humphreys and Udoh netting second-half goals in a 2-0 triumph.

Now sitting on 63 points from 31 matches, five point clear of third-placed Wrexham with 15 games remaining, Wycombe Wanderers will hope to build on their lead further with a 10th home league win of the campaign on Saturday, having only lost two of their 15 outings at Adams Park thus far.

They meet a visiting side who will bid to kickstart a climb towards the top half and end a four-match winless run at the weekend.

Wigan Athletic currently find themselves 16th in England's third tier having picked up 35 points from their 30 games thus far, although they have been stronger away from home with 19 of those points and five of their nine league wins coming from 15 attempts on the road.

It is in attack where Shaun Maloney's side have struggled thus far, with no other side in England's third tier having scored as few as their 28 goals, and they have added just two points and two goals to their tally in the last four attempts.

The Latics' most recent victory over Bristol Rovers was followed by defeats to Peterborough United and Stockport County either side of a draw with Lincoln City, before they they visited Crawley Town on Tuesday and shared the points in a 1-1 draw, as Dale Taylor's first-half opener was quickly cancelled out by Charlie Barker.

Now sitting six points outside of the top half and six points above the relegation zone with 16 games left to play, Wigan Athletic will be desperate to correct their form in the coming weeks to ensure they climb the table instead of slipping closer to the bottom four.

Team News

Wycombe Wanderers could be unchanged from Tuesday's 2-0 victory over Bristol Rovers, with Kieran Sadlier and top scorer Richard Kone set to remain sidelined by injuries.

If they do remain without Kone, who has netted 19 goals this season, Daniel Udoh will continue to lead the line having scored in back-to-back games to move onto eight for the term, while winger Beryly Lubala has notched up 10 of his own in his first season for the Chairboys.

Elsewhere, January signing Xavier Simons should again join Josh Scowen in the engine room, while Will Norris will continue to get the nod between the sticks, having only conceded one goal in his first three games for the club following a January loan arrival from Portsmouth.

Wigan Athletic continue to deal with an unenviable injury list, as James Carragher, Dion Rankine, Kai Payne, Luke Chambers, Matt Smith and Tyrese Francois could all miss out again.

Dale Taylor will lead the line with confidence against the club he spent last season on loan with, having taken his tally to seven goals alongside seven assists in 27 League One appearances this term, seeing him top the squad's scoring charts following the January departure of Thelo Aasgaard, who netted 12.

Following an injury of his own, Oliver Norburn returned to the starting XI in midfield in midweek and should again feature alongside Jensen Weir, while Owen Dale, Ronan Darcy and Joseph Hungbo will hope to continue in support of Taylor up front.

Wycombe Wanderers possible starting lineup:
Norris; Back, Low, Taylor, Harvie; Scowen, Simons; Onyedinma, Humphreys, Lubala; Udoh

Wigan Athletic possible starting lineup:
Tickle; Sibbick, Aimson, Kerr, Mellish; Weir, Norburn; Hungbo, Darcy, Dale; Taylor

We say: Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 Wigan Athletic

With League One's strongest attack meeting its weakest, we can only envisage Wycombe Wanderers further solidifying their top-two spot with a home victory over a Wigan Athletic side lacking momentum.
