Britain's Naomi Broady falls at first qualifying hurdle for Australian Open

British hopefuls Naomi Broady and Johanna Konta both suffer straight-set defeats at the first hurdle in qualifying for the Australian Open.

British number three Naomi Broady has missed out on qualifying for the Australian Open having suffered a straight-sets defeat at the hands of Urszula Radwanska this morning.

The 24-year-old fell to a 6-4 6-3 loss in Melbourne to leave Heather Watson as Britain's sole representative in the hat for the main draw so far.

Johanna Konta, another of Britain's qualifying hopes for the first Grand Slam of the year, was also edged out in straight sets to American Anna Tatishvili.

Tatishvili prevailed 6-4 7-5 in a match featuring eight breaks of serve to end Konta's hopes at the first hurdle.

The draw for the tournament takes place on Friday.
