David Ferrer has advanced to the quarter-finals of the US Open with a four-set win over former top-10 player Janko Tipsarevic in New York.
The fourth seed recovered from going a break down against his opponent, now ranked world number 21, to take the opening set on a tie-break, which he won 7-2.
Breaks were exchanged in the early stages of the second set, but Tipsarevic stole another game from Ferrer's serve, at the fourth attempt, on his way to levelling the contest at a set apiece.
There were also breaks and errors aplenty in the third set, but Ferrer began to assert his dominance on the contest when he won three games in a row to regain his overall advantage.
At last, each player managed to find some stability on serve in the fourth set, which lasted over an hour, before Ferrer won the tie-break to triumph 7-6(2) 3-6 7-5 7-6(3) over the Serbian.
