Aston Villa vs. Ipswich Town: Head-to-head record and past meetings

Ahead of Saturday's Premier League clash between Aston Villa and Ipswich, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two clubs.

Villa Park is the location for a Premier League mismatch on paper on Saturday afternoon, where Ipswich Town will endeavour to defy the odds against Aston Villa.

The Tractor Boys have lost each of their last four games in the top-flight but comfortably punched their ticket to the fifth round of the FA Cup last weekend, easing past Coventry City 4-1.

Unai Emery's men joined Ipswich in the pot for the last-16 draw owing to their 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on home turf, where the Lions have not been defeated in any of their last 11 top-flight contests.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 62
Aston Villa wins: 26
Draws: 16
Ipswich wins: 20

From 62 previous matches between Aston Villa and Ipswich Town in all tournaments, the head-to-head record is actually closer than one might expect, as the Lions' 26 wins is only marginally better than the Tractor Boys' 20.

Another 16 showdowns have ended in a share of the spoils, including their September 2024 battle at Portman Road in the Premier League, where Liam Delap was at the double to steal a point for Kieran McKenna's side.

Before Aston Villa rose back into the top division for the 2019-20 season, though, they normally had Ipswich's number in the Championship, winning three of their last four games in the second tier of English football from November 2017 to January 2019.

Unbeaten in five successive matches against Ipswich, Villa have not succumbed to defeat to their East Anglian foes since February 2017, where Emyr Huws struck the only goal of the game at Villa Park.

However, that triumph represents the only one that Ipswich have enjoyed in each of their last 15 games against the former European Cup winners, who also overcame the Tractor Boys in the 1995-96 and 2012-13 FA Cups.

Furthermore, Ipswich have remarkably not picked up a single home win over Aston Villa in over 32 years, last conquering the Lions at Portman Road in a 1992-93 EFL Cup last-16 replay; their last home league win in this contest came all the way back in 1984.

With five strikes apiece in this fixture, ex-Villa forward Andy Gray and former Tractor Boys attacker Eric Gates are the highest goalscorers in games between the Lions and Ipswich, closely followed by David Platt, Ray Crawford and Bobby Thomson.
