Girona produce a complete away performance to record a stunning 4-2 victory over Barcelona, which moves them to the top of La Liga.

Girona claimed a stunning 4-2 victory over fellow Catalan side Barcelona to move to the top of La Liga.

After taking the lead through Artem Dovbyk, Girona were pegged back within seven minutes following Robert Lewandowski's headed goal.

Undeterred, the visitors moved back into the lead before the break thanks to a strike from former Real Madrid man Miguel Gutierrez, before Valery added a third in the second period.

Although Ilkay Gundogan pulled a goal back late on, Barcelona's hopes of salvaging a point were quashed by Cristhian Stuani's 95th-minute strike.

As a result of their first competitive victory over Barcelona, the Blanquivermells leapfrog Real Madrid into first position, while Barcelona are seven points adrift in fourth place.

Before kickoff, high-flying Girona knew that a win would move them top of the La Liga table after Real Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw in Saturday's away meeting with Real Betis.

With the La Liga summit in their sights, the visitors caught their hosts off guard to move into an early lead, courtesy of Dovbyk's seventh league goal of the season.

Viktor Tsygankov latched onto Yan Couto's perfectly weighted-through ball, before teeing up his compatriot to guide home the opening goal with the assistance of the post.

After suffering an early setback, Barcelona quickly went in search of an equaliser, with Raphinha forcing Paulo Gazzaniga into a smart stop from point-blank range.

Despite being denied, Raphinha ultimately played a key role in Barcelona's leveller, swinging in a corner for Lewandowski to head in his ninth competitive goal of the campaign.

With parity restored, both teams went in search of the game's third goal, with Gutierrez drawing a finger-tip save from Inaki Pena, before Joao Cancelo saw his near-post strike kept out by the resolute Gazzaniga.

Gutierrez then gave Barcelona another scare when he dragged the ball wide after being teed up by Brazilian winger Savio.

The hosts ultimately failed to take heed of that warning shot, as moments later, Gutierrez drove into the box before firing past Pena at the near post to give Girona a precious half-time lead.

With his team trailing at the break, Frenkie de Jong tried his luck from distance in the opening stages of the second period, with his driven strike forcing Gazzaniga into a save low down to his right.

As the contest drifted into the final quarter, Xavi's side went close through Gundogan, whose controlled effort drifted just past the post to the relief of the visitors.

While many teams would have focused on preserving their lead, a high-scoring Girona side went on to add a third in the 81st minute.

Gazzaniga's long ball forward was flicked on by Stuani and into the path of Valery, who moved past Jules Kounde and drilled his shot into the bottom corner.

With time quickly running out, Gundogan gave the home side a semblance of hope in stoppage time when he thumped his left-footed strike past the outstretched Girona goalkeeper.

Amazingly, there was still time for the away team to restore their two-goal cushion through the experienced Stuani, who tucked home from Savio's lofted cross to clinch all three points and extend his side's unbeaten run to 10 competitive matches.
