Spanish manager Rafael Benitez is hoping that Chelsea supporters will eventually get behind him and the team.

New Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez has expressed his eagerness to win over the club's supporters.

His first match in charge of the Blues against champions Manchester City on Sunday afternoon was met by jeers from a large number of fans, who were not keen for the Spaniard to take over from Roberto Di Matteo following his stint with Liverpool.

However, Benitez has insisted that he is focused on winning football matches in the hope that the Stamford Bridge faithful will eventually take to him.

"Imagine you have a player that has no support from the fans. What I would tell him is to stay focused, do your job and concentrate on your football. For me it is the same," he told reporters.

"I understand the feelings of the fans because of my time at Liverpool. We had a rivalry and it was quite difficult. At the same time I will try to prove to them that I am here for the right reasons and that I want to win. If I can do it, they will be pleased. We have to win together.

"It's a situation that we cannot change in one minute. I will try to win for the club and for them."

Chelsea's next fixture is a home encounter with Fulham tomorrow night.
