Gary Cahill: 'I must work hard to keep England place'

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill acknowledges that he will have to work hard in order to keep his England place under new boss Sam Allardyce.

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has acknowledged that he must "hit the ground running" in order to keep his place in the England squad.

Cahill was part of the Three Lions side that under-performed at Euro 2016 and with Sam Allardyce having replaced Roy Hodgson, the vice-captain is looking to make the most of a new era with the national team.

The 30-year-old is quoted by Sky Sports News as saying: "I'm looking to keep involved and keep that shirt. I am excited to be working under Sam.

"I'm looking to impress him at the start of the season and also if I'm fortunate enough to be involved in the squad.

"It's going to be interesting to work under him. It's down to me to play well and make sure I hit the ground running so that I am in the squad."

Since making his debut in 2010, Cahill has made 47 appearances for England.
