Real Madrid announce that captain Sergio Ramos has returned a positive coronavirus test, one week after Raphael Varane contracted the disease.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has tested positive for coronavirus.

The 100-goal centre-back has endured an injury-plagued season in what may be his final year with Real Madrid, making just 15 appearances in La Liga as the clock ticks on his Bernabeu contract.

Ramos's latest muscular problem meant that he would not have been able to take part in Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg with Liverpool anyway, but the defender will now undergo a self-isolation period after contracting the disease.

Madrid announced last week that Ramos's usual centre-back partner Raphael Varane had tested positive for COVID-19, so Nacho Fernandez and Eder Militao are expected to form the defensive pairing at Anfield.

With Ramos's contract at the Bernabeu set to expire at the end of June, the defender has been linked with a move to Premier League sides Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Ramos is joined by Varane, Dani Carvajal, Eden Hazard and recent long-term absentee Lucas Vazquez on the list of players unavailable for Wednesday's game, with Real boasting a 3-1 lead from the first leg against Liverpool.
