Wolverhampton Wanderers vs. Manchester City: Head-to-head record and past meetings

Ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash between Wolves and Man City, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two clubs.

Arguably the mismatch of the Premier League weekend takes place at Molineux on Sunday afternoon, when Wolverhampton Wanderers pit their wits against reigning champions Manchester City.

Before the first ball is kicked in gameweek eight, 16 points and 18 places separate the two sides in the top-flight table, as Pep Guardiola's men reside in second place while Gary O'Neil's side prop up the standings in 20th.

The Citizens went into the international break on the back of a 3-2 come-from-behind triumph at home to Fulham, but their hosts were on the wrong end of a 5-3 thriller against Brentford, their fifth loss in a row in all tournaments.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 130
Wolves wins: 50
Draws: 25
Man City wins: 55

A fixture that has developed a rich history since the two sides first locked horns all the way back in 1899 - a Division One clash that ended in a 1-1 draw - Man City and Wolves have now crossed paths on 130 occasions in all competitions.

In spite of the current gulf in class between the two sides, the reigning Premier League champions only just edge the head-to-head history with 55 victories compared to 50 for Wolves, and they have also shaken hands on a draw 25 times.

The bulk of Wolves' successes in this fixture came in the 20th century, though, as the West Midlands side have only beaten Man City six times since the turn of the millennium; in contrast, the Sky Blues have marched to 17 victories since 2000.

The most recent of those successes saw the irrepressible Erling Haaland score four times in a 5-1 Etihad thumping in May 2024, which was Man City's way of enacting revenge for their shock 2-1 loss at Molineux in September 2023.

That surprise victory near the start of the 2023-24 Premier League season is the only victory that Wolves have managed in their last eight games against Man City, though, as the current top-flight champions have prevailed in the other seven, scoring at least three goals in six of those successes.

However, Wolves fans do not have to flick back too far through the annals for their last league double over Man City, as the Old Gold stunned Guardiola's side in both of their 2019-20 top-flight meetings, the year that Adama Traore silenced the Etihad crowd with a brilliant brace.

Wolves also came up trumps in arguably the most famous historical fixture between the two clubs, the 1973-74 EFL Cup final, where not even the famed City trio of Mike Summerbee, Colin Bell and Francis Lee could prevent the Sky Blues from falling to a 2-1 defeat.

A perpetual tormentor of Man City during his Wolves career, Jimmy Murray - who represented the club from 1955 to 1963 - scored a whopping 17 goals against the Citizens, while Haaland already tops City's charts with eight goals in just four games against the West Midlands side.
