Man United transfer news: 24-year-old offered shock escape route after 'rigorous' search

Greek giants Olympiacos reportedly express their interest in signing Manchester United attacker Antony on loan during the January transfer window.

Out-of-favour Manchester United winger Antony has apparently been offered a shock escape route from Old Trafford by Greek giants Olympiacos.

The 24-year-old has been a huge disappointment since his £85m switch from Ajax in the summer of 2022 and has featured just 12 times for the Red Devils this season, scoring one goal in the 7-0 EFL Cup thrashing of Barnsley in September.

Antony has not even started a single Premier League game this season, only totalling 84 minutes from six appearances off the bench, and he was an unused substitute in the 2-2 draw with Liverpool at the weekend.

Man United still have the Brazilian attacker under contract until the summer of 2027, but the Red Devils are expected to cut their losses at the earliest opportunity given that he has shown no signs of reviving his career under Ruben Amorim.

Antony's agent recently confirmed that "many clubs" had expressed an interest in signing his client either on loan or permanently this month, and according to The Sun, Olympiacos are among them.

Antony on radar of Spanish, Greek clubs?

The claim comes after journalist Dharmesh Sheth reported that clubs in Spain and Greece are both willing to offer Antony an escape route in January, and Olympiacos are said to be the interested party from the latter country.

The Red-Whites are supposedly conducting a 'rigorous' search for new attacking options this month, having cut ties with Willian at the beginning of this month only a few months after signing the former Chelsea and Arsenal man.

It is unclear whether the Greek Super League titans would be able to afford a permanent deal for Antony, whom Man United have accepted they will be making a huge loss on, but the Red Devils will not turn their nose up to appropriate loan bids.

From 94 appearances in a Man United shirt in all competitions, the Brazil international has only had a direct hand in a meagre 17 goals, 12 of his own and five assists.

Which other Man United players could move on this month?

New Man United boss Amorim has not been afraid to regularly rotate his resources, offering ample playing time to most members of his squad in either the Premier League or Europa League, albeit without much success in his early days in charge.

The Red Devils will have to sell before they can buy this month, opening up the possibility of a few notable sales, and possibly none more high-profile than wantaway winger Marcus Rashford.

The England international has publicly revealed his desire to pursue a new challenge, while fellow attacker Joshua Zirkzee has also been tipped to leave after just a few months, but Amorim has confirmed that he wants to keep the Dutchman at the club.

Veteran midfielders Casemiro and Christian Eriksen - the latter of whom is out of contract this summer - could also depart for the right price, although Harry Maguire's one-year contract extension option has been triggered.

Man United lie in a lowly 13th place in the Premier League table and are back in action on Sunday with a trip to Arsenal in the third round of the FA Cup.
