Garry Monk: 'Swansea City can build on top-half Premier League place'

Swansea City manager Garry Monk calls on his players to build on their 2-0 victory against Stoke City.

Swansea City manager Garry Monk has called on his players to build on their 2-0 victory against Stoke City and do more than just consolidate a place in the top half of the Premier League.

The Swans had to wait until the 77th minute to open the scoring when Jefferson Montero headed past goalkeeper Jack Butland.

Marc Wilson was then sent off for a second yellow card before Ki Sung-yueng added a second in injury time at the Liberty Stadium.

Monk told reporters after the game: "I'm very pleased. We controlled the whole game. I had words with the players at half-time and, in the second half, we were excellent. The goals we got were thoroughly deserved.

"We're on our way to consolidating our top-10 place. The feeling can be that you get safe and that's the job done. It's about getting the players to want more than that. They key is pushing and demanding higher standards, and the players do that for themselves as well.

"I'll have to reassess our target for the remainder of the season. I keep setting a new one every week. In the games left, it's about focusing again. I don't want the players to fall below the standards they've set."

Swansea sit eighth in the Premier League table, four points below seventh-placed Southampton.
