Tony Cascarino: 'Aston Villa had to include buy-out clause in Fabian Delph deal'

Aston Villa had to insert a £10m release clause in Fabian Delph's new contract or risk losing him for free, suggests Tony Cascarino.

Former Aston Villa striker Tony Cascarino has said that he feels sorry for the club, after it was reported that midfielder Fabian Delph has a release clause in his contract.

Delph's previous deal was due to expire this summer, but he signed a new one in January which allegedly contains a clause that says he can leave for £10m.

Cascarino told Sky Sports News: "The circumstances why Delph has a contract that has a release clause is he was nearly at the end of his previous contract.

"How can it be £10million? We're at a stage where literally players have a blank sheet of paper and clubs say fill in the blanks and tell us what you want.

"Players have got so much power in the modern game. Villa tried to broker a deal where they will get something. I feel sorry for the club, it's the way the modern game is."

Delph is being linked with a move to Manchester City.
