Hungary beat Austria in Bordeaux

Hungary open their Euro 2016 Group F campaign with a 2-0 victory over Austria in Bordeaux on Tuesday afternoon.

Adam Szalai and Zoltan Stieber both found the back of the net as Hungary opened their Euro 2016 Group F campaign with a 2-0 win over 10-man Austria in Bordeaux on Tuesday.

Both teams had chances during an entertaining contest, but it was Hungary that struck first in the 62nd minute through Szalai, before substitute Stieber made sure of the points in the 87th minute.

Austria came within inches of taking the lead inside the first minute when David Alaba fired one towards the bottom corner, only to see his effort crash off the inside of the post.

Hungary had an opportunity of their own in the fourth minute when Laszlo Kleinheisler struck one from distance, but it was a comfortable save for Robert Almer in the Austrian net.

Alaba had another opportunity for Austria in the 10th minute after a pass from Stoke City's Marko Arnautovic, but the Bayern Munich full-back fired straight at Gabor Kiraly, who in starting for Hungary became the oldest player to feature at the European Championships at the age of 40 and 74 days.

Zoltan Gera was the next player to try his luck from distance in the 24th minute, but the experienced midfielder's effort never had enough power to seriously trouble Almer in the Austrian net.

Alaba continued to look the most likely to make the breakthrough for Austria as the first period approached its latter stages, but the 23-year-old did not make the most of a free kick in a dangerous position in the 32nd minute.

Hungary's best chance of the first period came 10 minutes before the break when Szalai rose unchallenged inside the opposition box, but the striker headed away from goal, before Kiraly kept out a low Zlatko Junuzovic strike down the other end moments later.

Arnautovic set up another opportunity for Austria in the 42nd minute, but the attacker's cross into Martin Harnik was too strong and Hungary escaped another dangerous moment.

Down the other end, Hungary had an even better chance as skipper Balazs Dzsudzsak found himself unmarked inside the Austrian box, but the number seven could only drag his attempt wide of the post.

Both teams showed their attacking intent in the early stages of the second period, with Arnautovic threatening for Austria and Gera sending a powerful strike wide of the post down the other end.

Dzsudzsak threatened to make the breakthrough with a strike into the top corner 10 minutes into the second period, but Almer was on hand to make a smart save during an end-to-end period of the match.

Hungary made the breakthrough in the 62nd minute when Szalai collected a smart pass from Kleinheisler before finishing past Almer for his eighth international goal.

It went from bad to worse for Austria in the 66th minute when Aleksandar Dragovic picked up his second yellow card for a late challenge on Tamas Kadar inside the Hungarian penalty box.

Hungary came close to a second goal 20 minutes from time when Krisztian Nemeth curled one towards the bottom corner, but his effort just missed the post as Austrian's defence struggled.

Down the other end, Marcel Sabitzer met a low cross from Christian Fuchs, but the substitute somehow cleared the crossbar under little pressure.

Both managers made changes in the latter stages and it was a busy conclusion for the referee as late challenges continued to arrive from both teams. It was Hungary that scored the game's all-important second goal, however, as Stieber chipped Almer from close range after a quick counter-attack.

Next up for Austria is a clash with Group F favourites Portugal on Saturday night, while early group leaders Hungary will take on Iceland.
