Cardiff City fans blast 'English Football League' rebrand

Tim Hartley, the chairman of the Cardiff City Supporters' Trust, believes that the new 'English Football League' rebrand is "insulting" to Welsh clubs.

The chairman of the Cardiff City Supporters' Trust has described the Football League's rebrand to the English Football League (EFL) as "insulting" to Welsh clubs.

The League announced yesterday that, from the end of this season, the name would change as part of a "comprehensive corporate and competition rebranding".

Two of the current 72 clubs - Cardiff of the Championship and League Two side Newport County - are based in Wales and Tim Hartley believes that there is no point in the new name.

"It's a little bit insulting that both Welsh clubs and potentially many more from lower down the football pyramid will be classed as English," Hartley told PA.

"The rebranding is factually incorrect and completely unnecessary. Newport and Cardiff City are both in the Football League.

"The rebranding will make a lot of money for companies making logos and headed paper but will do nothing for teams playing in the three divisions. What's the point?"

Hartley has contacted Cardiff to ask if they agreed with the proposals after the League said that they had made the change following consultation with clubs and supporters.
