Preview: Charlton Athletic vs. Stevenage - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Monday's League One clash between Charlton Athletic and Stevenage, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Stevenage will be bidding to get their League One playoff hopes back on track when they head to Charlton Athletic side on Monday afternoon.

The visitors are currently eighth in the table, one point behind sixth-placed Lincoln City, while Charlton occupy 16th position, seven points outside of the relegation zone.

Charlton were relegated from the Championship at the end of the 2019-20 campaign, spending the last four seasons in the third tier of English football, finishing seventh, 13th and 10th in their last three.

The Addicks have struggled for consistency this season, boasting a record of 10 wins, 16 draws and 14 defeats from 40 matches to collect 46 points, which has left them in 16th spot in the table.

Nathan Jones's side are only actually seven points clear of the relegation zone, but they will bring a nine-game unbeaten run into Monday's clash with Stevenage.

Since their last defeat - a 2-0 reverse at Reading on February 10 - Charlton have won three and drawn six of their nine games in League One, and they will enter this match off the back of a 1-1 draw with Exeter City.

The Addicks boast a record of seven wins, five draws and seven defeats from their 19 home league games this season to collect 26 points, which is only the 16th-best home record in the league, and they will be welcoming a Stevenage outfit that have claimed an impressive 31 points from 20 games on their travels.

Stevenage, meanwhile, are bidding to make it back-to-back promotions, having finished second in League Two last term to secure a return to League One for the first time in 10 years.

The Boro are now aiming to rise into the Championship for the first time in their history, currently sitting eighth in the League One table, picking up 63 points from their 40 league matches this season.

Steve Evans's side are just one point behind sixth-placed Lincoln City in the battle for the playoffs, but their form at this stage of the season will be concerning for their supporters.

Stevenage, who drew 0-0 with Bolton Wanderers on Friday, have not been victorious in League One since the end of February, losing two and drawing four of their last six games at this level of football.

The Hertfordshire outfit drew 1-1 with Charlton in the reverse match earlier this season, but they lost 2-0 when they last travelled to the Addicks for a league game in February 2012.

Team News

Stevenage's Louis Thompson in action on January 6, 2024© Reuters

Charlton had Chuks Aneke back on the bench against Exeter after four matches out with a calf issue, and he entered the field in the second half of the 1-1 draw.

Aneke is again expected to be among the substitutes for the first whistle on Monday, with head coach Jones potentially naming an unchanged side for this contest.

Alfie May is the top goalscorer in League One this season, netting 21 times in the third tier of English football, and he is again expected to be joined by Daniel Kanu in the final third of the field.

Stevenage, meanwhile, have no fresh injury concerns from their goalless draw with Bolton last time out.

Jamie Reid has scored 17 times in League One this season, with only May and Portsmouth's Colby Bishop (18) managing more, and he will again line up in a front three for the playoff hopefuls.

Jordan Roberts has also been a vital player for Stevenage this term, scoring five times and registering five assists in 40 league appearances, and the 30-year-old will also feature in the final third of the field on Monday afternoon.

Charlton Athletic possible starting lineup:
Isted; Thomas, Hector, Gillesphey; Watson, Dobson, Coventry, Anderson, Small; May, Kanu

Stevenage possible starting lineup:
Ashby-Hammond; James-Wildin, Vancooten, Butler; Smith, MacDonald, Burns, Guinness-Walker; Reid, Thompson, Roberts

We say: Charlton Athletic 1-1 Stevenage

Charlton are the draw specialists at the moment, while Stevenage have also shared the points in their last two matches in League One. Both teams will believe that they can triumph on Monday, but we are expecting a tight match to end in a low-scoring draw.
