Didier Drogba retires from international football

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba announces his retirement from international football with Ivory Coast.

Striker Didier Drogba has announced that he is ending his 12-year international career with the Ivory Coast.

Drogba represented his country at the World Cup finals in Brazil this summer, but after netting 65 goals in 104 appearances for the African nation, he has decided to focus his attention on club action.

The 36-year-old said in a statement: "It is with much sadness that I announce my retirement from international football.

"I've passed 12 years with the national team. It's been full of emotions from my first call-up to my last and I've always tried to give my best for my country.

"I'm very proud to have been captain of this team for eight years and for contributing to placing my country on the world stage of football."

Drogba rejoined Chelsea on a one-year contract last month.
