Roy Hodgson delays England squad announcement

Roy Hodgson pushes back his latest England squad announcement until next Sunday, due to a "large number of players" who are currently fitness doubts.

England boss Roy Hodgson has pushed back the naming of his latest squad until after the latest round of Premier League fixtures.

The team was due to be announced on Tuesday ahead of the upcoming games against San Marino and Switzerland.

Hodgson will now leave his final selection until Sunday evening, however, in the hope that he will have a full group to choose from.

"After meeting with my coaching staff today we have decided to wait until this Sunday before announcing the squad to face San Marino and Switzerland," he said in a short statement.

"We have a large number of players that still need confirming regarding availability and fitness so rather than selecting a larger squad now, we will wait for the games at the weekend before choosing around 23 players who are definitely available."

Gareth Southgate will still name his England Under-21s squad on Tuesday afternoon as originally planned.
