Andrea Stramaccioni backs Inter Milan's decision to take on striker John Carew on trial with the objective of offering him a short-term contract as Diego Milito's replacement.

Inter Milan coach Andrea Stramaccioni has welcomed the club's decision to take on striker John Carew on trial.

The 33-year-old will remain with the Nerazzurri on trial for 15 days after which the Italian giants will decide whether to offer him a contract or not.

"With [Diego] Milito's injury the club wanted to look around to see if there's a certain type of player who might fit our purposes," BBC Sport quotes Stramaccioni as saying.

"Obviously we're talking about free agents within a certain date, so the options are limited. Our directors have identified that type of player in Carew and now he's going to have a trial with us.

"Then we'll decide whether to sign him or not. It's a fairly normal procedure in other countries."

Carew has been without a club since last summer when he left West Ham United.
