Brendan Rodgers: 'Liverpool can still finish in top four'

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers insists that his side can still achieve a top-four finish, despite the Reds' poor start to the season.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has insisted that his side can still achieve a top-four finish come the end of the season.

The Northern Irishman is still confident that his side can climb the table despite currently sitting 12th in the league.

The Reds are also struggling in the Champions League, with a victory over Basel needed to progress through to the knockout stages, but Rodgers maintains that his side can get the job done.

"I have an inherent belief that we can still make the top four - absolutely," the 41-year-old told reporters.

"I know what we are all capable of here. For whatever reason, it hasn't happened for us yet but I said to the players the other night our standards will go up after the game against Ludogorets (a 2-2 draw).

"Thankfully no matter how we have been, we are still within touching distance and that is the initial aim. Fourth and then moving forward. If that is the aim - and we are only five points off it - then that gives me belief we have every chance of doing it."

Liverpool are already 18 points behind league leaders Chelsea and five points behind Manchester United who sit in fourth.
