Wayne Rooney: 'Three points more important than performance'

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney insists that gaining three points against Tottenham Hotspur was more important than their performance.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has insisted that his side will improve over the next few weeks after grinding out a 1-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur.

United had an own goal from Kyle Walker to thank for their opening-day victory at Old Trafford, but Rooney believes that it was only the result that mattered as they got their season off to the perfect start.

The 29-year-old is quoted by BBC Sport as saying: "Today was all about the three points. Pre-season was relatively short compared to previous ones. We're still working. It was a big victory for us today."

Louis van Gaal's men finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season.
