Ray Wilkins: 'Jose Mourinho must change style at Manchester United'

Former Manchester United player Ray Wilkins believes that new manager Jose Mourinho will need to switch to a more attacking style than he showed at Chelsea next season.

Former Manchester United midfielder Ray Wilkins has claimed that Jose Mourinho will need to change his style of play when he arrives at the club.

Mourinho was finally confirmed as the new United boss last week, taking over from Louis van Gaal after the Dutchman had failed to secure Champions League football for the club.

The Red Devils scored just 49 goals on their way to a fifth-place finish under Van Gaal, comfortably their lowest tally in the Premier League era, and Wilkins believes that Mourinho will need to show more attacking intent than he did during his time in charge of Chelsea.

"He needs to change the way he thinks about his football a little bit. One of the criticisms levelled at Van Gaal was the fact that he was very defensive," he told Sky Sports News.

"Possession is fantastic, and Mourinho likes to play that way, but he likes to play with a progression as well. He likes his players to be aggressive, go forward and score.

"He will change a bit to the way a Manchester United supporter wants them to play and he will bring a winning mentality as well. Wherever he's been he's won. He won't settle for second best."

Mourinho's first match in charge of United will come against Borussia Dortmund in the International Champions Cup on July 22.
