Manchester United reportedly considered a late move for Everton winger Anthony Gordon before deciding to sign Antony from Ajax.

Manchester United reportedly gave consideration to making a late bid for Everton winger Anthony Gordon.

Despite having spent big on Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro last week, it was frequently claimed that United had plans to conduct more business in the transfer market.

That has proven to be true with the Premier League giants on the brink of signing Ajax winger Antony in a deal worth in the region of £85m.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Brazilian has completed his medical and will be unveiled as a United player on Tuesday.

However, according to The Athletic, United were, at one stage, contemplating taking a different approach when it came to strengthening in the final third.

The Red Devils initially had at least two bids rejected by Ajax for their most prized asset, the insistence being that they did not want to sell so close to the end of the summer transfer window.

That stance led to United having to contemplate alternatives, something which seemingly led to them considering whether to join the race to sign Gordon from Everton.

Despite Everton having no desire to sell, it has been well documented that Chelsea have been willing to spend upwards of £50m on the Toffees academy graduate.

However, the Merseyside outfit are said to be holding out for a fee closer to £60m, and there is now less talk of the England Under-21 international making the switch to Stamford Bridge.

The report suggests that United enquired about the 21-year-old's situation before ultimately deciding to spend big on Antony.

Although Gordon has made a strong impression since being provided with a regular role in the Everton starting lineup, his goal against Brentford at the weekend was just his fifth Premier League strike in 53 outings.

Newcastle United had also been admirers of Gordon before they eventually made the decision to break their club record to sign Real Sociedad forward Alexander Isak.

Gordon currently has three years remaining on his contract and Everton have offered the playmaker a chance to improve those terms.
