Crawley Town have advanced to the second round of the League Cup following a shock penalty shootout win over Millwall on Tuesday.

The away side nearly took the lead after six minutes when Billy Clarke struck from outside the box, but Shane Lowry made the block.

Crawley went ahead after 16 minutes when Hope Akpan headed a Nicky Adams cross into the back of the net.

Millwall were level seven minutes later, however, when Darren Ward found the corner of the net from close range. Both sides had chances in the latter stages of the half, but it remained level at the interval.

Crawley took the lead once more after 55 minutes, when Adams converted from close range.

Millwall so nearly levelled after 70 minutes when Shaun Batt advanced on goal, but Paul Jones made the save.

The home side did eventually level with five minutes remaining, however, when Batt found the back of the net from close range to level at 2-2.

Both sides had chances in the opening period of extra time, with Gary Alexander coming close for Orient while James Henry fired wide for Millwall.

The match headed for penalties, however, and it was the League One side who won it 4-1 to book their spot in the next round.
