Preview: Peterborough United vs. Shrewsbury Town - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Peterborough United and Shrewsbury Town, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Two teams that sit in the top half of the League One table will face off on Tuesday when Peterborough United play host to Shrewsbury Town.

The visitors, who occupy eighth position, are eight points adrift of the playoffs, while Posh are just one point further back.

After claiming consecutive victories over Morecambe and Plymouth Argyle, Peterborough have had to settle for one point from their last two games.

A goalless draw against Charlton Athletic was followed by a narrow 1-0 defeat to league leaders Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Having won just two of their last six matches, Peterborough will be well aware that they need to embark on a winning run if they are to stand any chance of closing the nine-point gap to the playoffs.

Although Peterborough have lost their last two away meetings with Shrewsbury, they cruised to all three points in their most recent home encounter, thrashing Tuesday's opponents 5-1 in October 2020.

That impressive result took place in Peterborough's promotion-winning campaign, but hopes of recording another sizeable victory may be slim, as Posh have failed to score in three of their last five home games.

Shrewsbury, meanwhile, have proven to be a tough team to beat in recent times, losing just one of their last 10 matches.

Their only defeat in that 10-game period took place against Accrington Stanley in February, but since that result, Steve Cotterill's side have picked up four points from two games.

After recording a 2-0 home victory over Wycombe Wanderers, Saturday's away trip to Pride Park looked destined to end in defeat when Derby County took a two-goal lead into half time.

Tom Bayliss quickly halved the deficit after the break, before Luke Leahy completed the Shrewsbury comeback in the 72nd minute, dispatching his spot kick past Joe Wildsmith in the Derby goal.

Although Shrewsbury have failed to win their last three away games, they have been a strong defensive unit on their travels this season, conceding just 15 goals in 17 matches - only Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley have conceded fewer away goals in the third tier.

Team News

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson on February 19, 2022© Reuters

Peterborough will be without the services of Josh Knight, who will serve the second game of a three-match suspension.

Dan Butler has been unavailable for Peterborough's last two games, but he could return to the matchday squad on Tuesday, providing Ferguson with another option off the bench.

After dropping down to the bench at the weekend, Hector Kyprianou and Joe Ward could be brought back into the lineup for the midweek encounter.

As for the visitors, they are still unable to call upon long-term absentees Daniel Udoh and George Nurse, but they have not reported any new injury concerns ahead of Tuesday's encounter.

Matthew Pennington has started Shrewsbury's last three games, and he will retain his place in a back three alongside Chey Dunkley and Tom Flanagan.

After collecting four points from their last two matches, Cotterill could select the same lineup for a third consecutive game.

Peterborough United possible starting lineup:
Norris; Thompson, Kent, Edwards, Ogbeta; Kyprianou, Taylor; Ward, Poku, Mason-Clark; Clarke-Harris

Shrewsbury Town possible starting lineup:
Marosi; Pennington, Dunkley, Flanagan; Moore, Phillips, Leahy, Shipley; Bayliss; Saydee, Bowman

We say: Peterborough United 1-1 Shrewsbury Town

Although Peterborough will be targeting a win that would move them above their opponents in the league table, we think that they may have to settle for a point against a Shrewsbury side who have lost just one of their last 10 games.
