The visitors took an early lead after just nine minutes, as Dani Carvajal whipped in a cross from the right wing, and Karim Benzema rose highest to head past Atletico keeper Jan Oblak.
Atletico responded well to going behind as Angel Correa drilled a shot wide of the bottom corner, before the young Argentine created space for another shot, only to miss the target.
The hosts were awarded a penalty on 21 minutes as Sergio Ramos brought down Tiago in the Real penalty area, but Antoine Griezmann's spot kick attempt was well saved by Keylor Navas.

Cristiano Ronaldo could have doubled his side's lead on 34 minutes when Benzema found the Portuguese international in the box, but the 30-year-old blazed over the bar, before the Madrid talisman struck a free kick over Oblak's goal.
After the break Atletico came close to finding an equaliser, as Correa threaded a good pass in the direction of Fernando Torres, but the veteran striker's effort from a tight angle went narrowly wide.
Both sides struggled to create many clear opportunities in the second half, although Atleti substitute Yannick Ferreira Carrasco managed to hit the side-netting, before Ronaldo did the same with a powerful strike at the other end of the pitch.
The hosts came close to an equaliser on 81 minutes, as Carrasco delivered an inviting cross towards Vietto, but the striker headed wide.
Atletico did manage to find a goal two minutes later, as Jackson Martinez drilled a low cross into the box from the left, before Griezmann touched the ball towards Vietto for a finish from close range.
Martinez came close to finding a winner before the final whistle, as the Colombian striker forced a good save from Navas with a curling effort from outside the penalty area, but ultimately both sides were forced to settle for a point apiece.
