Gareth Bale scores as Real Madrid beat Tottenham Hotspur in Munich

Gareth Bale scores against former club Tottenham Hotspur as Real Madrid earn a 2-0 win in the opening match of the Audi Cup in Munich.

Goals from James Rodriguez and Gareth Bale have given Real Madrid a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the opening match of the Audi Cup in Munich.

A lively opening saw both sides threaten to take the lead, but it was Spurs who created the first meaningful opening when Erik Lamela somehow fired high and wide from a Danny Rose cross.

Madrid fought back soon after as Jese rattled the crossbar with a fizzing drive before the forward was denied by Michel Vorm.

The two teams continued to show plenty of attacking intent after that, though Madrid looked the more likely to break the deadlock.

Former Spurs winger Gareth Bale nodded over with 30 minutes on the clock, while Luka Modric also came close to finding the net against his old club when his deflected effort forced a save from Vorm.

Rafael Benitez's side finally made their dominance count on 36 minutes through James Rodriguez, who took advantage of some slack marking to head Isco's cross home.

Both managers made numerous changes in the second half, disrupting the flow of the game. Christian Eriksen floated a tame shot over the crossbar with 54 minutes gone, but that was the only real opening that Tottenham could muster despite controlling possession.

Madrid made Spurs pay by landing the killer blow with 12 minutes left to play as Bale's long-range drive found its way past Vorm.
